New York Comic Con

Even though it's been a month (already!?) since Comic Con, we just processed a video that we took of Hasbro's Marvel Universe diorama.  We believe this is the same dio that they had at San Diego Comic-Con.  It's an impressive piece and the number of characters that Hasbro included really shows the depth of the lineup they've been able to create.  Check it out below or follow us on our YouTube channel.

New York Comic Con Wrap Up

NYCC

This was our first New York Comic Con and overall it was a success.  Saturday morning, after taking the ferry into Manhattan from New Jersey, it was a short walk to the Javits Center where we joined the huge crowds waiting to enter the convention.  Our first stop was to pick up our press badges and by then it was 10:00 and the show was on.

We had several stops planned for Saturday, including stopping at most of the booths featuring Star Wars toys, books and video games.  Hasbro's Transformers panel and the Avengers presentation were the two big goals for the day but we only managed to make the first.

We have to admit that we were somewhat unprepared for the scale of the show and the amount of people, and that forced us to change several plans on the fly once it sunk in just how large the show was.  The first casualties were several booths on the sales floor as it was too busy to really get a good look at things and even harder to get to speak with the dealers and reps.

The biggest change was missing the Avengers panel on Saturday night.  Our plan was to hit the line about 5:00 which was over an hour before the panel was scheduled to start.  Unfortunately, we found out that the line had been capped "for hours" and that while we could wait, we were not guaranteed entry.  Needless to say, we skipped it.

Darth Malgus

Still, we made the rounds of the various Star Wars licensees and checked out upcoming product from Hasbro, Hallmark, Del Rey and DK Publishing.  Kotobukiya had some fun items on display and the hype around The Old Republic release had people lined up all day for a chance to play the game or just check out some of the cool merchandise that's going to be released in support.

The Her Universe booth seemed to be busy most of the time but we did manage to stop and snap some photos of the new charm bracelet.  Sunday we stopped back and had a quick chat with Ashley Eckstein who is always fun to meet in person.

Gentle Giant

Gentle Giant did not have their own booth but we spotted a selection of their Large Scale Retro figures at the Diamond Select booth.  Earloomz, a company we hadn't heard of before, was showing off a selection of Bluetooth headsets from various licenses including Star Wars and Star Trek, Hello Kitty and Peanuts.

4 Corners Concepts had some excellent wall mounted display cases in their booth, featuring Sideshow and Hasbro 12" figures, Marvel Universe and Transformers.  Tailored to the toys being displayed, they would make a great item to display one nice, focused collection.

You can't call your show a Comic Con without comics, and they made their presence really felt in Artist Alley.  We swung by Daniel Khanna's booth to check out his excellent Transformer and G.I. Joe art and even picked up a print.  We didn't bother to get any sketches done since we had so much on our plate, but no matter what style of art you like you could have found it in NY.

After hitting as many booths as we could, it was time for some shopping.  Our friends at The Toy Heaven and The Toy Cave both had busy booths when we stopped by so there was only a few minutes to chat.  Luckily, both James and Andy were with us for dinner that night.  Besides a few exclusives that we picked up in the morning, the only other items on the list were some back issues of IDW G.I. Joe comics which ranged from $1 to about $3 each.  For the size of the show it seemed that the choices for the modern comics we were after was a little slim.  Still, if you were looking to fill in runs of Marvel or DC titles, you could have done very well.

Even though the convention was open until 7:00, the crowds and the heavy backpack full of swag and comics did us in around 6:00 and we headed to the hotel to check in before dinner.

Sunday morning we were back at the Javits Center right at 10:00 for the opening and after a quick stop at the Hallmark booth we headed over to Mattel's booth to finish taking photos of the cool toys they're putting out.  We didn't have them on our original plan but after getting a glimpse of their Ghostbusters line on Saturday, felt it was worth the time to go back for a really good look at their DC and Masters of the Universe toys.

Master Chief

MEGA Bloks had a booth in the hallway near the entrance to the hall and we nearly missed them in the crush of people.  But on our way out for the day we did get to see an excellent Master Chief from Halo and a small diorama they had which featured several of their Halo building sets.

One aspect of a comic convention that you can never escape are the cosplayers.  Having attended four Star Wars Celebrations and all 11 Wizard World Philadelphia events, cosplay is not a new concept to us, but we'd never seen it at this level before.  On top of the normal costumes of superheroes that you find at a comic con, Javits was also playing host to the New York Anime Festival which brought in a whole other crowd of costumers.  Stormtroopers mingled with Batman, Deadpool, Steampunk and InuYasha.

Our time on Sunday was cut short and we left around 1:00 to make the trip home.  That left a few things undone that we wanted to get to, but there was so much to take in that even had we spent the full day on the floor, we still would have missed something.

New York Comic Con was an incredible experience and we'll definitely be back in future years.  With Star Wars Celebration VI being held next August in Orlando, FL, it may be too much to also include NYCC for 2012 but it's tempting to try and make both.

If you have never been to a comic convention before, you may want to start smaller than NYCC, but if you're up for it we would highly recommend going.  At times on Saturday the crowds got to the point that we wanted to give up and leave, but a little patience and we were able to deal and still get things done that we had planned and had an excellent time.

NYCC Coverage

We're starting to upload our photo galleries from this weekend's New York Comic Con.  We took a lot of photos that need processing so make sure to stop back as the day goes on.  We'll post on Twitter as we update throughout the day.

We didn't make it to every panel and booth that we originally intended, but added a few as we ran across them at the convention.  We never did get a chance to stop by the Onell Design booth but found the Mattel offerings to be quite fascinating, for example.

The Events section at the top of the page will be updated as we post, and our first update is Comic Images.  Check back soon for new photos and news.

NYCC Coverage

We'll be arriving at the New York Comic Con on Saturday at 10:00am and during the day we have plans to attend several panels including Hasbro's Transformers presentation at 12:15.

The big panel we're looking forward to will be the Marvel Studios: Marvel's The Avengers panel at 6:30.  Depending on time, we may also attend the Hasbro Marvel Action Figures Panel and Star Wars Art of Comics with Jonathan Rinzler.  On Sunday, our plan is to attend the Del Rey Star Wars Books Panel at 2:30.

Throughout the weekend we'll be stopping by the booths of such companies as Her Universe, Hallmark Cards, Hasbro, Kotobukiya and Star Wars Celebration VI to get an idea of what's coming up for collectors and fans.

Outside of Star Wars, we'll check in with the G.I. Joe Club to see what they'll be bringing us with their new action figure subscription program.  Onell Design, makers of the Glyos action figures, is high on our list and we're hoping to spot some new, cool toys from them as well.

Make sure to follow us on Twitter as we'll be updating throughout the day, including posting photos.  If you have any questions for the various companies we'll be visiting, direct message us on Twitter and we'll see if we can get some answers for you.

Her Universe

GEEK GIRLS INVADE THE BIG APPLE

October 5, 2011 - One of the fastest growing demographics in the Science Fiction world today is the female audience, sometimes referred to as “Geek Girls.” They will be in full force at this year’s New York Comic Con October 13th-16th at the Javits Center.

Recognizing and embracing this incredibly important and increasing segment of the sci-fi audience, Ashley Eckstein, the voice of Ahsoka Tano on the television series, Star WarsTM : The Clone Wars, is bringing to New York Comic Con her new line of sci-fi fashion apparel and merchandise, titled Her UniverseTM (www.heruniverse.com), designed exclusively for women who want to show their geeky pride and love of Science Fiction. Ashley has now become one of the leading voices for Geek Girls.

Married to former Major League Baseball player, two-time World Series Champion and World Series MVP, David Eckstein, Ashley has made a career of fighting for the underdog, of leading the charge to create a place for female fans in a pop culture community typically dominated by men. In addition to fighting alongside the male heroes in The Clone Wars, Ashley aims to help her fellow female fans find their rightful place in the pop culture community. Her Universe is a “geek chic” line featuring fashionable, female–focused apparel and accessories based on such high-profile entertainment properties as the beloved Star Wars franchise and Syfy’s most popular shows such as Battlestar Galactica, Warehouse 13 and more.

"Most people do not realize that close to half of all sci-fi fans are women,” said Ashley. “This all started when, selfishly, I wanted more Star Wars merchandise made for fangirls. I love sci-fi and I quickly found out that I wasn't alone. I found scores of other fangirls online and at conventions who just wanted to be recognized and accepted in this unique genre. I felt that someone had to step up and give a voice to all of these passionate women, and that's when I founded Her Universe.”

Fans attending New York Comic Con will find two convention-exclusive items from Her Universe – a Star Wars Naboo charm for the new Star Wars Charm Bracelet and a 100% sterling silver Battlestar Galactica Cylon Toaster Necklace. Plus, just in time for Halloween and available this year only at New York Comic Con, Ashley will be offering 100 Star Wars Halloween-themed earth friendly tote bags featuring the art of popular Star Wars illustrator Katie Cook – the perfect trick or treating bag for fans of all ages.

New York Comic Con posted their list of panels for the upcoming show and it looks like Hasbro will have a Star Wars panel on Friday night at 5:00.  We won't be able to make that as we'll only be at the show Saturday and Sunday, but we should have coverage of the Transformers panel on Saturday.

We will be able to stop by Hasbro's booth and will have any news tidbits we can con the team members into leaking.  Since the schedule just came out we don't have our full plan yet but will soon enough.
