Vintage Collection Wave 2

Vintage Collection Wave 2
EntertainmentEarth.com posted a new pre-order for the Vintage Collection wave 2 figures yesterday and we now have our first glimpse of the new Darth Sidious figure we've been hearing about.  Unfortunately, although the photo is small, I don't think this is exactly the Senate Duel version of the character that most collectors have been asking for.

One good piece of news, the Sandtrooper included in the wave appears to be the new version that was packed in with the Walmart exclusive Dewback last year.  At least he's sporting the new weapon from that pack, which is a good sign.

The Magnaguard finally gets a soft goods cloak for the Saga version, the Clone Wars figure from earlier this year beat him to it.

We'd already seen photos of the new General Grievous thanks to a Q&A response, and Obi-Wan and Anakin, which may have some tweaks or small updates, are mostly versions we've already seen.

The rest of the wave includes Legacy Collection re-packs of Commander Cody and ROTS Clone Trooper and Wave 1 Han, Luke, Vader and Boba Fett.

Celebration V - Commitment Chapel

Have you ever wanted to get married at an official Star Wars event by your favorite Star Wars character?  Then you may be interested in the just-announced Commitment Chapel at Star Wars Celebration V.

Unfortunately (or, maybe fortunately), this is all for fun.  So don't worry, nobody is going to drink too much blue milk in the cantina and wake up married to a gundark.

Celebration V - AFX Maquette

An update to the info we posted on Saturday about AFX offering a Han Solo maquette at Celebration V.  The maquette is being advertised as having "300 units" at the convention.  This is true, but the actual edition size of the maquette is 800 pieces.

According to the AFX blog, the maquette is their Summer Tour exclusive and will debut at San Diego Comic-Con with 400 pieces being available, 300 at CV, and the final 100 via the AFX website.

Celebration V - Collectors Panels

StarWarsCelebration.com announced the first four Collectors Panels today with two that are similar to previous Celebrations and two new ones.

  • Animation Collecting: The Holiday Special to the Clone Wars
  • Food Collectibles
  • The Empire Strikes Back in Trading Cards
  • The End of Star Wars Collecting?

Food Collectibles and Animation Collecting are similar to panels offered previously.  While there have been trading card panels before, this one will be dedicated to all things Empire Strikes Back.  The End of Star Wars Collecting is new and sounds like it may be an interesting look at when or if this huge collecting hobby of ours will come to an end.

The article also reminds us that the Collectors Panels will have a giveaway again this year, but no details have been released on that as of this point.

Celebration V - Autograph Guests

StarWars.com announced two more guests for Celebration V including Nick Gillard, who will be doing a presentation on the fighting styles he created for the Jedi in the prequel films.  Gillard will also be signing autographs during the weekend.

Joining Gillard will be Ray Park, one of the people that Nick worked with in The Phantom Menace to give us the excellent "Duel of the Fates" fight with Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan) and Liam Neeson (Qui-Gon).

George Lucas at Celebration V

It was announced this afternoon that George Lucas will attend Celebration V in Orlando, Florida.  This will be his second Celebration appearance and only his third convention.  No firm date or time has been set but the official announcement is posted on StarWars.com.

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back 30th Anniversary

Today is the official 30th Anniversary of the release of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, the film still considered by many to be the best of the six film Star Wars saga, and my personal favorite as well.

Empire tells an interesting story about our Rebel heroes on the run from the Imperials who are out for revenge for the defeat they suffered in Star Wars: A New Hope.  From the opening search for Luke Skywalker, to the famous battle between Snowspeeder pilots and the AT-ATs, all the way to Dagobah and Cloud City, Empire continued all the action that we loved from the first film while also fleshing out the characters that we cared about.

The screenplay written by Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan was expertly directed by Lawrence Kasdan.  All of our favorite actors were back, including Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher, and they were joined by the suave Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian.

But Lando wasn't the only new character introduced in Empire, we also met Jedi Master Yoda and Boba Fett.  Darth Vader's command to Fett, "No disintegrations," cemented him as one of the coolest characters from the saga, and Yoda's mischievous ways and odd speech patterns still influence pop culture today.

And who can forget one of the ultimate 'I did not see that coming' moments in cinema history when Darth Vader revealed to a defeated Luke Skywalker that he was his father?  Genius!

This summer, fans everywhere can celebrate the anniversary of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back online at the official site, at Star Wars Weekends at Disney, by watching Spike TV's Original Trilogy marathon on May 22nd or, best of all, by attending Star Wars Celebration V in Orlando, Florida.  Happy Anniversary, Empire!

Celebration V

In celebration of the anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back, we're also debuting our Celebration V event coverage.  Leading up to Celebration V in August, this page will be a one stop collection of all the information about convention exclusives, seminars, autograph guests, artists and special events.

Then, on August 10th, we'll begin our live coverage from Orlando, Florida where we plan on bringing you photos and video of as many activities as we can.  We're less than three months away and excitement is starting to build!

Sideshow is celebrating the 30th Anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back with a contest and a preview of a new 2011 Yoda!  The giveaway is for a life-size Darth Vader bust while Yoda will be in the 1:6 scale line.  Check out the photos below of Yoda and then head over to Sideshow's website to view their Production Peek video and enter the contest to win a Darth Vader bust.

Gentle Giant has posted two new Star Wars products for pre-order, both due on early 2011.  First up is a Figrin D'an mini bust from his appearance in A New Hope.  No edition size yet but he's available for $59.99 from Gentle Giant or you can probably save a few dollars by ordering with another e-tailer.

The second item is a Bantha statue with Tusken Raider.  The statue is 12" high by 18" long and runs $249.99 directly from GG.

Hasbro

YakFace.com posted new product listings over the weekend and they seem to clear up some info that we've had rumors about or was alluded to in one of the recent Q&A sessions.

New items listed include a Clone Wars 4-pack of figures, Kit Fisto's Jedi Starfighter and Clone Wars Warriors and Droids Collection.  Not sure yet what that last set is yet but it sounds like a Battle Pack.

Also listed is a "Malevolence Collection" which is a set of 2-packs that each come with a DVD.  Hasbro mentioned DVD pack-ins in a recent Q&A session and this may have been what they were talking about.  The 2-packs include Obi-Wan & Grievous, Anakin & Clone Trooper and Ahsoka & Plo Koon.  I'd assume that the DVDs will each be an episode from the Malevolence arc of the Clone Wars show.

Head over to Yak Face for the full list which also happens to be broken out with tentative release dates, some of which aren't that far away.

G.I. Joe Convention

2010 GI Joe Con

During the G.I. Joe Convention this year there was a movie fest on Friday night.  All of the submissions were from Club members and there were some very well done videos.  Now, two of them can be seen on YouTube.com.

The first video is titled "Dr. Jones: Toy Therapist" and is produced by Barry Kay of Not Your Average Joe Productions.

The second video is by Regular Joes Entertainment, David Pisani and Tod Pleasant, and is called "40 Years of Adventure: The True Story of the Adventure Team."

Both use well designed sets and several 1:6 action figures to tell funny and entertaining stories.  Check them out!

Hallmark

The new Dream Book is out and Hallmark is showing off most of their 2010 Keepsake Ornaments.  As usual, there are several Star Wars ornaments and this year they are celebrating the 30th Anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back.  We had a sneak preview of these at the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con but now we have a better view with the Dream Book release.

Hallmark Yoda & Rex Hallmark Luke Skywalker & Snowspeeder Hallmark Boba Fett & Han Carbonite and Vader & Emperor

Not pictured is a Bespin Lando Calrissian which will release during the July preview and be a limited edition ornament like we've had the past several years.

Both the Boba Fett with Han Carbonite and Clone Wars Yoda with Rex sets are minis according to the measurements and price.  July 10-11, 2010 will be the ornament premiere week this year with the full range of Hallmark ornaments being released the weekend of October 9-10, 2010.

Hasbro

Hasbro released new images of the upcoming Vintage Collection figures from the first wave.  Nothing new, these figures were shown off at Toy Fair in February but an official photo release means we're getting closer to the official release.  Check out the gallery here.

Hasbro Celebration V Contest

YakFace.com posted a note directly from Hasbro that clears up some of the logistics behind the instant win Celebration V VIP contest.  Apparently, Hasbro reps delivered new (technically old at this point) product to stores and there were winning tickets randomly inserted in ten of them.  There will be non-winning product on shelves which have had stickers added to them.  With only 10 winning tickets, we wish you luck in finding them.

Hasbro Celebration V ContestCelebration V VIP Ticket Contest

After the initial post about Hasbro's Celebration V VIP ticket giveaway, I was wondering how Hasbro was going to get the game pieces to the public since they really don't have any product scheduled before the end date of July 26th.  It was being discussed on the JediDefender.com forums and, after a visit to Toys-R-Us last night, it seems we have an answer; Hasbro isn't sending out new product, they're advertising on product already in the stores which can't possibly have the game pieces inside.

At the Toys-R-Us store in Horseheads, NY there were several action figures that have been in the store for months and now have a sticker on them.  Same for some of the Battle Packs.  Although there is no photo evidence, there was also a report of a sticker being found on a Leia & Xizor comic pack, and those have been in stores for over a year.  I did find a sticker on a new Expanded Universe wave figure, but didn't see anything inside the package that looked as if it could be a game piece.

Now the question is, will there be any new product on the shelves between now and July 26th that will actually have a game piece inside the packaging?

Think Geek

Wampa Rug
Wampa Rug

Last year Think Geek turned an April Fools' joke into one our top rated items of the year when they brought the Tauntaun Sleeping Bag to market in time for Christmas.  No April Fools' joke this year, instead, straight to the cool collectible; Wampa Rug.

If you've ever wanted a trophy rug from your favorite galaxy far, far away, Think Geek, with cooperation of Comic Images, has you covered.  Their new Wampa Rug, in the fine tradition of the bear rug, will be launched alongside Star Wars Celebration V and will ship on August 25th.

The price is $99.99 just like the sleeping bag.  Check out Think Geek's website for additional details and images.  And no, sadly, Slave Leia is not included.

Celebration V

Plans for Celebration V are starting to fall into place and the most recent announcements include autograph guests and a contest for two VIP tickets to the convention.

Celebration V VIP Ticket Contest
Contest

The contest for VIP tickets is in conjunction with Hasbro and specially marked toys will include a game piece where you could instantly win one of the 10 grand prizes.  The contest runs from now until July 26, 2010.

Game pieces can be found in marked action figures, Starfighter vehicle packages, Battle Packs and Comic packs.  Head over to the contest page for all the rules and more details on how you can also send away for a game piece.

Autographs

Just announced this week are the following autograph guests who will be attending Celebration V in August:

  • Peter Mayhew
  • Paul Blake
  • John Coppinger
  • Richard Bonehill
  • Mike Quinn
  • Dermot Crowley
  • Tim Rose
  • Orli Shoshan

Previously announced were fan favorites Carrie Fisher and Jeremy Bulloch.  Keep your eyes on StarWarsCelebration.com for all the latest information.

Hasbro

Sandtroopers.com has been on a roll debuting new photos of upcoming product this week and yesterday they got a huge scoop with the first photo of a boxed Jabba the Hutt.  This figure is scheduled for later in the year and will be a Walmart exclusive.  Jabba comes packed with Oola and the set is titled "Jabba's Throne" which, per Hasbro, should be included.

Acme Archives

If you've been collecting the Character Keys from Acme Archives then you may want pay attention to San Diego Comic-Con this year.  Morly, from Acme, announced on the RebelScum.com forums that they will release the final Key from their Star Wars line at this year's show.

This final key will be an animated character from the Saga films and this announcement does not signal the end of Keys based on the new Clone Wars animated show.  Also in the thread on the forums, Morly mentions that there may be more Character Keys of Saga characters in the future but they won't be in the animated style.  We should see more information in June, if not before.

G.I. Joe Convention

2010 GI Joe Con
2010 GI Joe Con

We have wrapped up our coverage of the 2010 G.I. Joe Convention which took place a week ago in Providence, Rhode Island.  It was a very fun trip and an excellent show.  I'm hoping I can get to another convention in the coming years.

Special thanks to the G.I. Joe Club and the hard work all of the staff put into making an excellent show, bringing together the guests and setting up the panels, for scheduling the Hasbro tour and for all the excellent exclusive toys they managed this year.  Make sure to check out our coverage and keep coming back as we'll be covering the Philadelphia Comic Con (formerly Wizard World Philly) in June as they celebrate their 10th anniversary.

Gentle Giant

It's time to play catch-up with what's been going on in the Star Wars collecting world over the last week and we'll start with Gentle Giant, who announced two new products, including one that's available now

Bookends

The first item is the one that's available now, Star Wars bookends.  The logo bookends are Borders exclusives and limited to 5,000 pieces.  They're available now in stores and on Borders.com for $59.99 but if you are Borders Rewards member you should be able to find a coupon and save yourself some cash.

Borders Star Wars Bookends

Ralph McQuarrie Darth Vader

G4's "Attack of the Show" had a Star Wars special on April 29th where they gave away a one of a kind bronze mini bust of Ralph McQuarrie's Darth Vader concept.  This bust, only in color, will also be this year's San Diego Comic-Con exclusive.

McQuarrie Concept Darth Vader mini bust

The Comic-Con version of the bust will have three interchangeable heads and should make a nice companion piece to last year's concept Boba Fett bust.  No pre-order date for this yet but we should see one closer to July.  Also no price or edition size but look for this to be similar to previous SDCC exclusives.  Still no word on the Celebration V exclusive.

Hasbro

Sales

If you are looking for some affordable action figures then you may want to stop in either Toys-R-Us or Walmart.  Toys-R-Us is running a sale on action figures until July 3rd and they're only $4.99.

Walmart has also marked down their Star Wars action figures to $4.50.  This seems to be in most stores but Walmart is always sketchy on their markdowns so your mileage may vary.

Toys-R-Us Exclusives

The sale price comes at a perfect time as the final wave of Legacy Collection, the Expanded Universe wave, is just hitting Toys-R-Us stores.

Also be on the lookout for the Force Unleashed multipacks.  Both the TFU sets and the EU wave were scheduled to hit Toys-R-Us stores on May 1st and some stores will have an end cap featuring these and other Star Wars toys.

Jodo Kast

This past week a photo showed up on Sandtroopers.com of a new Jodo Kast figure.  The carded example is marked as at K-Mart exclusive.  Speculation is that this could be part of the Bounty Hunter promotion that was part of the marketing calendar information leaked earlier this year just before Toy Fair.

This version of Jodo Kast looks to be an upgrade from the one released in the Legacy Collection in 2008.  He appears to have more articulation and he's also sporting a removable helmet.

Saga Legends

New photos of upcoming Saga Legends figures have been released and although we already know what to expect in the first couple of waves, one surprise is that there appears to be an update to the extra weapons that will be packed in.  While the Clone Gear that's been packed in up till now has been the same in all figures, there appears to be new weapons in the mix and they're being billed as "Secret Weapons" on the packaging.

The assortment of weapons included for the last two years was based on the Battlefront II multipacks that were released on-line and at Toys-R-Us stores.  The new assortments appear to be based on the Republic Elite Forces packs and include Jango Fett blasters and rifles like those included with the ARC Troopers and Republic Commandos.

We're unsure at this point of the weapons will be randomly packed or if there will be a pattern.  For example, will Jango Fett always come with the same assortment or will it be luck of the draw?  We'll update here and in the Saga Legends checklist as we have more details.
