The Art of Ralph McQuarrie Having the opportunity to see Ralph McQuarrie's work in person is always a pleasure, so when it was announced that Celebration V would host The Art of Ralph McQuarrie I added it to my must-see list of things to do. What made the display even more special was the fact that most of the artwork on display had been "lost" for the past 30 years. Ralph was having work done on his home's furnace when he discovered a folder of artwork that had been forgotten. It was not included in the recently produced "The Art of Ralph McQuarrie" book so Celebration V was it's first appearance. A 48 page booklet was available at the show and each piece from the exhibit was included, making it an excellent souvenir for fans of Ralph's work. Along with a booth in the exhibit hall, the McQuarrie exhibit room handed out a set of nine trading cards during the weekend. The fronts of the cards depict Ralph working on his art while the backs, when placed together, form a reproduction of one of Ralph's famous paintings of Yoda on Dagobah.
Also available from the exhibit room were a set of 12 Metallix prints, each one 10x20" and limited to 80 pieces each. Making them more special is that each was personally signed by Ralph himself. The prints are in the style of the vintage Portfolios that were produced for the Original Trilogy films, but most of the pieces haven't been available in this format before.
Even Cartamundi celebrated Ralph's work, they handed out a set of four Aces cards for Celebration V that, when put together in pairs, depicted two classic paintings of Ralph's work.
The Art of Ralph McQuarrie was one of my personal highlights during the weekend and I hope that everyone that attended Celebration V was able to visit the display. For those that didn't, or didn't attend CV, the slideshow below includes each piece of artwork displayed, with multiple shots of some pieces to better show the detail on the small thumbnails Ralph is famous for.
