1 Mace Windu Preview Figure
Yes, it's been almost 8 years since the Sneak Preview Mace
Windu action figure was offered in anticipation of the then
upcoming release of The Phantom Menace. Arguably
this is still the nicest Mace Windu figure that Hasbro has
released and he also had some very nice store displays
advertising him.
The offer was kind of steep requiring 6 proofs of purchase
(pop) along with a store receipt dated between October 1 and
December 31, 1998. You also needed a check for $2.99 to
cover postage. Quite a few people complainted because of
the receipt and the narrow 3 month period. Word of faked
receipts was rampant on the Internet.
Most stores offered the promo via a sticker that was applied
to the front of Star Wars figures. The offer was orange
and followed closely on the heals of a yellow sticker that
offered $2 off on non-Freeze Frame action figures.
Toys-R-Us and Wal-Mart stores, on the other hand, both
offered some interesting signage for this offer. They both
had shelf talkers with pads of paper forms attached to them.
The TRU offer was just for the Mace Windu figure and the shelf
talker had a form printed directly on the cardboard along with
the graphics for the figure.
Wal-Mart had a second offer for a POTF2 action figure poster.
That offer required 2 pops and $1.00 shipping. The
paper forms at WM included both the Mace and poster offer.
The shelf talker had similar graphics to the TRU shelf talker
with the added text for the poster superimposed over the photo
of Mace. WM stores also had overhead signs that attached
to the aisle displays for the offer.
Till now I've had the displays, the TRU shelf talker and pads
of forms from both Wal-Mart and Toys-R-Us. With a recent
trade I've been able to add the Wal-Mart shelf talker to my
collection. The shelf talker has a cardboard pad with one
form still attached. They used two-sided tape to affix the
pad to the shelf talker. Unlike the TRU shelf talker, the
WM version does not have a printed form on the cardboard.
The part of the shelf talker that attaches to the shelf is
white on the WM display and printed on the TRU version.
The final difference is the text for the poster offer that I
mentioned before.

Wal-Mart Shelf Talker
Adding this shelf talker completes my set of Wal-Mart store
displays for the Mace Windu preview figure. I'm unsure if
there are any other signs from other stores in the US or other
countries but I haven't seen them.
You can see the Mace Windu displays as well as other promos
and premiums on the General Collection
page.
